A real review of Hello Fresh, a meal delivery service

Hello Fresh reviewMy husband and I have been busy taking care of our newborn baby, so we haven’t had much time to grocery shop. I decided to try Hello Fresh, a meal kit delivery service, to make our lives easier while still enjoying delicious food. I took advantage of a half-price offer for my first week – and if you decide to try it for yourself, click here to use my affiliate link which will give you a $40 credit for your first week trial.

It took me about an hour to make this appetizing plate of cherry-drizzled pork chops from Hello Fresh

The food arrived conveniently packed with cold ice packs on our doorstep. I absolutely loved how the individual bags for each meal had EVERYTHING you need, all in one place. Literally, every single ingredient for each meal was included – super convenient! It eliminates the need to grocery shop.

You do have to spend time chopping and preparing the produce

I chose the “Classic Plan,” which gave me 3 meals (2 portions per meal). There was plenty of food in a satisfying amount. Hello Fresh also has “Veggie” and “Family Plan” options.

We received two boxes, because I tried it for two weeks. This meal that I’m featuring here was my favorite, so that’s why I’ve chosen to focus on the cherry-drizzled pork chops. I love cherries! It was so good.

My husband did the math, and figured out it’s about $9 per meal for the regular (not sale) cost of Hello Fresh. We figured that’s pretty decent for a home-cooked meal, a little less than we would pay at a restaurant without the hassle of leaving the house… it would be tough to take a newborn to a restaurant! So it was great to have the food delivered to us, and be able to do it all in our own kitchen.

I also liked that there was exact nutritional information for each meal. That’s extremely helpful!

The entire process was simpler for me than it was for my husband – sadly, he was not familiar with phrases like “zest a lemon.” He literally had to ask me what was zest and how to do it? So it’s not for complete beginners…

One flaw, if I’m being nitpicky, is that Hello Fresh underestimates the time it takes to prepare the meal from start to finish. They say about 30 minutes, but for all 6 meals that we made, it took an average of an hour. Maybe we’re just slow, but I do think things take longer. Like, for example, the recipe card said to cook each pork chop 3-6 minutes per side. It ended up being more like 8-12 minutes per side, and that adds up. We ain’t tryn’a eat no raw pork chops!!! 😉

Overall, my husband and I saw pros and cons for Hello Fresh, but for the most part we were pretty darn pleased. It was nice to sit down to a beautiful meal and enjoy the fruits of our labors.

  1. I’ve wanted to read a review of this service for a while. It seems like an amazing idea, but I’m not sure how functional it is. It seems to be convenient enough and possibly worth the cost

  2. I absolutely love Hello Fresh. I’ve used Blue apron in the past and realized Hello Fresh is my favorite of the two. I’ve learned that they both under estimate how long it takes prepare. But I’m also slow with cutting vegetables.
